Abstract
This article examines the strategic significance of the Malaysia–Panama (MALPAN) relationship within the broader context of global maritime geopolitics. It argues that although Malaysia and Panama are geographically distant, both countries occupy pivotal positions in the world’s maritime trade network through two critical chokepoints: the Strait of Malacca and the Panama Canal. As disruptions in global shipping routes increasingly affect energy security, supply chains, and trade resilience, cooperation between middle powers that oversee these chokepoints becomes more consequential. The article highlights how MALPAN serves as a quiet but important framework for enhancing maritime dialogue, economic cooperation, and strategic stability amid growing geopolitical competition. It further contends that such partnerships demonstrate how regional calm can be sustained through pragmatic diplomacy and shared maritime interests, even when global tensions escalate elsewhere. Ultimately, the article positions MALPAN as an underappreciated but increasingly relevant mechanism for reinforcing connectivity, resilience, and cooperative security in an interconnected world.
