Abstract
The fundamental spiritual, ethical, and legal principles of Islamic economics and finance are profoundly aligned with pro-environmental behavior (PEB). Given the significance of environmentally sustainable products in Islamic finance, this study investigates the relationship between religiosity and PEB in Malaysia. Data from the 5th, 6th, and 7th waves of the World Value Survey (WVS) are utilized. Sociodemographic, income, education, trust, and political awareness variables are investigated in addition to religiosity. The results suggest that the impact of religiosity on PEB varies depending on the specific PEB measures employed. Importance of god in life has a positive relationship with preferential priority for the environment over economic growth but a negative relationship with membership in environmental organizations. Education is positively correlated with PEB, while trust and political awareness facilitate participation in environmental organizations. The findings indicate that the promotion of Islamic finance products through environmental causes must be in accordance with the unique context and motivations of the various types of PEB.
