Abstract
Introduction: Hip fractures among older adults are a growing public health concern due to their association with significant physical, emotional and social challenges. Recovery is often complex, requiring not only medical care but also psychological resilience and social support. In Malaysia, limited research explores the lived rehabilitation experiences of older adults post-hip fracture. This study aims to explore the rehabilitation and recovery experiences of older adults with hip fractures in Kuantan. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted among older adults aged 60 and above who had experienced a hip fracture and were undergoing or had completed rehabilitation at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA), Kuantan. Using purposive sampling method, 12 participants were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. Verbatim transcripts were generated using the Goodtapes app, and themes were developed iteratively based on recurring patterns. Results: Four main themes emerged: (1) Lived Experiences During Rehabilitation and Recovery, (2) Barriers to Rehabilitation, (3) Social Support and Cultural Influences on Rehabilitation and Recovery and (4) Long-term Recovery Expectations and Satisfactions. Participants described pain, fear of falling, loss of independence and challenges in accessing care, while also emphasizing the importance of family support, faith and self-motivation. Conclusion: This study provides in-depth insights into the multifaceted experiences of older adults recovering from hip fractures. Understanding these experiences can guide healthcare professionals in delivering more holistic, culturally sensitive and patient-centred rehabilitation interventions.
