Abstract
The concept of the Halal economy has gained significant global attention as nations, industries, and consumers increasingly recognize the ethical, sustainable, and moral dimensions of economic activity rooted in Islamic principles. The term Halal transcends its traditional association with food to encompass a comprehensive worldview that integrates spirituality, ethics, and sustainability into economic systems. This chapter lays the foundation for understanding the Halal economy by exploring its definition, guiding principles, philosophical roots in Tawhidic epistemology, and its relationship with global ethical frameworks such as Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards. The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has been instrumental in promoting the intellectual development of the Halal economy through its mission of integrating Islamic values and knowledge in all spheres of life. In alignment with IIUM's vision to become a leading international centre of Islamic education, the Halal economy represents a model of development that embodies the principles of rahmatan lil-'alamin (mercy to all creation), adl (justice), and ihsan (excellence). It is an economic system designed to ensure ethical prosperity that harmonizes material well-being with spiritual fulfilment.
