Abstract
The integration of communication skills within Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) classrooms remains a persistent challenge, with graduates frequently reported as lacking the communicative competence required for academic progression and workplace effectiveness. This concern has been further intensified by students' rapid, largely uncritical adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Rather than supporting communicative development, AI is increasingly used to generate reports, presentation scripts, and spoken texts that are reproduced verbatim, resulting in diminished communicative agency, shallow meaning-making, and automation bias in communication practices. This conceptual paper argues that prevailing approaches to communication skills instruction and assessment in TVET inadequately address issues of epistemic responsibility, message authenticity, and ethical knowledge production in AI-mediated learning environments. Drawing on the fundamental principles of hadith methodology, sanad (structured transmission of information), matan (clarity and coherence of meaning), tabayyun (verification), ṣidq (accuracy), and amānah (integrity), the paper proposes an alternative pedagogical and assessment framework for communication skills courses. These principles are reconceptualised as transferable epistemic and communicative practices that can be systematically integrated into teaching, learning, and rubric design to guide students in producing, evaluating, and communicating information responsibly, rather than passively reproducing AI outputs. The paper advances three contributions: articulating the relevance of hadith-informed epistemic principles beyond religious scholarship, addressing AI-dependent communication assessment practices in TVET, and demonstrating how traditional epistemic frameworks remain valuable for responding to contemporary educational challenges.
