Professor Zainul Ahmad Rajion

Prof. Dr. Zainul Ahmad Rajion Field of Specialization: Oral Maxillo-Facial Imaging / Oral Maxillofacial Radiology Zainul A Rajion is a Professor (since 2016) and former Dean at the Kulliyyah of Dentistry, International Islamic University Malaysia. Prior to this appointment he was formerly the Deputy Dean Research and Innovation (2013 - 2015), Postgraduate Coordinator at the School of Dental Sciences Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) from 2008-2011 and leads the Craniofacial Medical Imaging Cluster. He was seconded from USM to Oral Radiology Unit, Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Diagnostic Sciences, College of Dentistry; King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a Visiting Professor and Academic Staff from January 2015 to June 2018. Prior to his academic posting in USM, Prof. Zainul Rajion started his carrier in Ministry of Health from September 1990 to September 1999. He was posted to various units in different states and his last posting was in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery HRPZ Kota Bharu, Kelantan. He obtained his PhD (Radiological Research based on CT scan) in 3D morphometric analysis of craniofacial deformities in children with cleft lip and palate in 2004 at the University of Adelaide, Australia. His research interests include 3D craniofacial reconstruction applying Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CADCAM) software based on radiological and stereo photogrammetric data, craniofacial deformities, and biomaterial. He subsequently made research and clinical visits to Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Maastricht University, Medical Imaging Research Group, Radboud University Nijmegen, Netherlands and Oral Imaging Centre, School of Dentistry, Catholic University Leuven, Belgium and Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore (2010-2011), Oral Maxillofacial Radiology Departments in Chulalongkorn University and Mahidol Universities, Thailand and University Padjajaran (UNPAD) Bandung, Indonesia. He was sponsored by the Malaysian Biotech Corp. to do Certificate for Entrepreneurship Learning from University of Cambridge, United Kingdom in 2009. He is a recipient of various research grants includes Australia Dental Research Foundation Grant, Yayasan FELDA, Fundamental Top-Down Grant, Ministry of Higher Education, IRPA Top-down, E-Science MOSTE, CRADLE Investment Fund and Research University Team (RUT) Grant. He is also recipient of multiple awards including the Best Paper in the Mimics Innovation Awards - 3D landmark analysis for development of Malaysian craniofacial database at the Annual Conference “Computer Guided Implantology & 3D Medical Modelling” Leuven, Belgium 2005, Silver award for the invention of the Photogrammetry imaging system- MyCranio in the International Invention, Innovation, Industrial Design and Technology – ITEX 2008 and Bronze for MyCranio and MyCast BioMalaysia Bioinnovation Award 2008. One of the locally product called MyDental Bib won a silver award in the International Exposition of Research and Invention of Institutions of Higher Learning (PECIPTA 2009). Dr. Zainul A Rajion is also examiner in undergraduate and postgraduate level in Malaysia, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. He was Senate member of USM from 2017-2019. He was the founder Editor-in-Chief of Archives of Orofacial Sciences (Scopus Indexed) - official journal of the School of Dental Sciences, USM (2008 -2015) and now Editor-in-Chief of IIUM Journal Orofacial Health Sciences (IJOHS) and former President Elect IADR Malaysia Section 2014- 2016. He is an active member of International Association of Dental Maxillofacial Radiology, Asian Pacific Craniofacial Association and Asian Oral Maxillofacial Radiology. On behalf of the Asian Academy of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Radiology (AAOMFR), Prof Dr. Zainul A Rajion was elected as a Director of AAOMFR, Malaysia Section 2023-2024. He is also reviewer of international, national journals and assessor for grant application. He has 4 Patents filed in Malaysia Intellectual Property Organization. Dr. Zainul A Rajion has published widely in craniofacial imaging and craniofacial deformities, both nationally and internationally.
