My involvement in the obstetrics and gynaecology fraternity started as early as 1989 at Hospital Kuantan, I then further trained as obstetrician and gynaecologist at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kubang Kerian. As a clinician I am a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist and Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM. My involvement in the obstetrics and gynaecology fraternity started as early as 1989 at Hospital Kuantan, I then further trained as obstetrician and gynaecologist at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kubang Kerian. My interest in perinatal medicine brought me to Chang Gung Memorial University Hospital Linkou, Taiwan, a three thousand bedded hospital and the only laser therapy centre of Taiwan managing twin-twin transfusion syndrome. The centre that educates me on fetal medicine especially in prenatal aneuploidy screening, management of fetal growth and multiple pregnancy. My other passion is in the management of the life-threatening placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) where I attended training at Veteran General Hospital, Taoyuan, Taiwan later gained further experience on management of high-risk pregnancy at The Royal Hospital, Sultanate of Oman. I continue life-long educating myself through continuous learning, and benefited most when I prepared challenging lectures whenever invited to speak at congresses.
I was appointed as head of two departments, the Department of O&G of Kulliyyah of Medicine and the Department of O&G at IIUMMC or SASMEC @IIUM in January 2017 till August 2021 again for January 2022 till August 2023 Given the two hats, I was further challenged with a severe shortage of staff, Alhamdulillah still surviving with excellent outcomes on both the academic and clinical sides.
I am the leader for BFHI or Sejahtera Flagship (2019-2022) that has successfully achieved the mission for Baby Friendly Hospital accreditation for SASMEC @IIUM according to WHO criteria. Under the flagship I also pioneered the establishment of the first sharia-compliant milk bank in Malaysia, namely the ‘Pusat Susu Bonda Halimatussaadia’ or Halimatussaadia Mother’s Milk Centre at SASMEC @IIUM. With the team members we managed to produce two books 1. Standard Operating Procedure for HMMC (LY2022C00247) and 2. The Journey of Halimatussaadia Mother’s Milk Centre (ISBN on its way).
At national level, I am the committee member for the national curriculum for postgraduate training of obstetrics and gynaecology in Malaysia. With the team I co-authored 1. Obstetrics and Gynaecology Postgraduate Training in Malaysia: Training Curriculum (ISBN 978-967-19566-1-8) and 2. Obstetrics and Gynaecology Postgraduate Training in Malaysia: Guide for Applicants (ISBN 978-967-19546-1-4). I am a trainer for MOG and MFM subspecialty.
