Abstract

This descriptive and analytical study discussed; the attitude of Islam towards poetry and poets in the first Hijri century. It is part of an extensive PhD study in Education. The study aimed: to discuss the position of the true religion represented by the Noble Qur’an and the Noble Prophetic Sunnah regarding poetry and poets. To discuss the development that occurred in poetry since the first century AH. Through the descriptive analytical approach, the topic was discussed in two sections. The findings indicated that: The Holy Qur’an refuted the lies of the Quraish in their claim that the Qur’an is poetry. In the Qur’an’s description of the poets of polytheism, the poets of truth and faith were excluded. The Prophet did not like poetry, although he praised some poetry for its good qualities. Many scholars of interpretation have based their martyrdom on poetry in the interpretation of the Qur’an and hadith. It has been proven that the Companions did not exaggerate the issue of poetry, but poetry did not distract them from what is more important. An elite group of poets who adhered to the curriculum and values of Islam appeared in their poetry. Poetry flourished through poets being influenced by the words and style of the Noble Qur’an.
