Abstract

ABSTRACT Arabic novels is one of the resources that can be utilised in the teaching and learning of Arabic. However, they are rarely used as a teaching aid to improve the proficiency of non-native students except for those majoring in Arabic literature specialisation. This study examined how non-native Arabic students perceive the use of novels in Arabic language learning. It also explores strategies employed by students when using novels for Arabic language learning. This qualitative study involves interviews with ten students studying Arabic Prose Texts at the International Islamic University of Malaysia. The data, which were analysed thematically showed that students were positive about the use of Arabic novels in terms of vocabulary, language structure and skills. Apart from that, there were also negative responses in terms of low motivation, lack of interest and minimal exposure to Arabic novels. However, the variety of strategies used was able to raise students’ awareness of the importance and benefits of Arabic novels in Arabic language learning. Several suggestions are made for integrating literature and linguistics to make Arabic language learning more effective and student-centred through this new approach.
