Abstract

Humblebragging is a statement masked by complaint or statement that exhibits a sense of humility. Humblebragging is often uttered to highlight achievements or positive qualities. Utterances according to Searle’s Illocutionary Act theories, can be categorized into five types which are Assertive, Directive, Commissive, Expressive, and Declarative. This quantitative research aims to investigate the frequently used Illocutionary Point in Complaint-based Humblebrags and Humility-based Humblebrags found in social media platforms of Malaysian prominent figure, Vivy Yusof. Using content analysis to achieve the purpose of this research, the data collected were gained through Vivy Yusof’s selected YouTube videos and Instagram posts. The theoretical approach in this study adapted Searle’s Illocutionary Act Theory and Sezer, Gino, and Norton’s Complaint and Humility-based Humblebrags Theory. The frequently used Illocutionary point for both types of Humblebrags is Assertive. Assertive in the form of informing, denying, swearing, and suggesting are found in all Humblebragging statements. Moreover, there are other Illocutionary Points that were paired with Assertive utterances such as Directive and Expressive. However, in Humility-based Humblebrags, humility is commonly exhibited in the form of crediting others including the Creator. This research asserts that Assertive is the frequently used Illocutionary Point in both Complaint-based and Humility-based Humblebrags
