Abstract

The Qur’an is the main source of revealed knowledge that address various principles of human life including cleanliness. In many aspects, the injunction and application of cleanliness in several verses describe its great spiritual and ritual dimensions. Cleanliness in the Quran involves principles on inner and outer purification, tangible and intangible, material and immaterial, or physical and spiritual. It ranges from hand washing, taking bath, dietary guide, bodily cleanliness, intercourse rules, menstruation guide, taking ablution, cleaning impure substance, to eliminating bad human personality such as lust, anger, greed, envy, and ego. Hence, this article deliberates the concept of cleanliness and its aspects as addressed in several Qur’anic verses that enable readers to know and understand several terminologies related to cleanliness. It comprehends the meaning of cleanliness and its dimensions with the help of the explanation of scholars and exegetes as well as through reflection and reasoning which relate to our daily life. The verses on cleanliness and its related aspects are retrieved and selected from the Qur’an. The Qur’anic Tafsir and relevant literature are reviewed through textual and content analysis to develop more understanding of the selected Qur’anic verses on cleanliness. The findings enlighten the fundamental concept and aspect of cleanliness from Qur’anic perspective which contribute to the appreciation of this literature for understanding the message of Islam.
