Abstract

Objective Malnutrition among elderly population is a common issue. The use of nutrition education as a part of nutrition care plan is able to improve their nutritional status. Hence, development of nutrition resource kit specifically addressing the needs of malnourished and at-risk elderly would be beneficial. This research aimed to develop and assess acceptability of a newly developed nutrition resource kit among malnourished and at-risk elderly in Malaysian health clinic setting. Methodology This study consisted of three phases and was conducted in selected health clinics in Kuantan, Pahang. Phase I composed of qualitative needs assessments among elderly to elicit types of nutrition resource kit, Phase II was the development of the nutrition resource kit which consisted of scoping review and; content and face validation towards the newly developed materials, while Phase III was the acceptance evaluation of the materials among malnourished and at-risk elderly which involved individual in-depth interview and triangulation. Results & Discussion An A5-sized booklet with incorporation of an educational video in a QR code were developed. Both printed and educational video were found to have good content and face validity. Suggestions given by experts and elderly were taken into consideration and revision was done accordingly. Then, further acceptance evaluation revealed four themes; 1) positive acceptance, 2) elderly-friendly, 3) valuable and 4) individual preference. Analysis of triangulation also revealed that all elderly positively evaluated both resources. Suggestions given by elderly were reviewed and modification was performed accordingly. This nutrition resource kit will serve as an educational material for them to prevent and overcome malnutrition. Conclusion This newly developed nutrition resource kit both in the printed and electronic format was well-accepted by the malnourished and at-risk elderly. Therefore, it could be used as an important reference for them in combating malnutrition. Acknowledgement: FRGS/1/2018/SKK06/UIAM/02/5
