Abstract
Innovation, like strategy, started to get a lot of attention over the past few decades. Nations and corporations wanted to harness the power of new ideas for much needed growth. Leaders wanted to use those new ideas in a predictable way of inventiveness. There was a lot of discussion about how to manage a pipeline of innovation so that new products could provide an engine for economic health. However, there was not so much discussion about how new ideas were created. There was very little debate about how to organize the best conditions for creativity and innovation. People focused on how to share them (diffusion) and use them (exploitation). It was only recently that mainstream attention turned to how people create new insights (exploration) and ideas (generation). Yet, believing innovation is only about new ideas is a mistake. There are old solutions to new problems and new solutions to old problems. The smart innovator understands the trade-off between newness and control. The smart innovator explores whether a new idea is really worthwhile. This course gives participants a new set of tools for and experience in finding and developing innovative alternatives for addressing strategic business problems. You will explore creativity from individual and team perspectives and identify innovation opportunities and roadblocks in organizational settings.
