Abstract
Researchers at International Islamic University Malaysia are developing dentifrices that consist of virgin coconut oil (VCO) as defence against oral health problems.
The project intended to maximise the usage of natural and abundant source that available in Malaysia, which is coconut. This effort will boost the economy growth of the rural population, where the most of coconut supply coming from and at the same time will benefit in health of the people in Malaysia.
IIUM researchers lead by Dr Zurainie are developing dentifrices that consist of mouthwash and varnish that could help in preserving tooth structure from decay. So far, there is no antibacterial dentifrices derived from VCO in the market. The special features of this product is that it includes the development of HALAL emulsion to mix the oil and water which is a good principle and syariah compliance which will be an added value to the product. The product will be an alternative to the users especially Muslim users to use product that they confident with the ingredients. With this VCO dentifrices we are actually harnessing our locally grown crop that we know of the inherent medicinal qualities such as Medium Chain Triglyceride as having antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.
