Abstract

Actinomycetes are renowned as an eminent source for antibiotics and wide range of biological compounds. The discovery of streptomycin from Streptomyces paved the way for exploration and exploitation of actinomycetes for the discovery of antibiotics and other important compounds. Recognizing the prospective of actinomycetes in natural product discovery, many researchers in Malaysia also took the initiative to participate in actinomycete exploration from local environments. This review summarizes and highlights the research conducted on actinomycete diversity and their biological potential particularly from East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia coastal water namely, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan.
