Abstract

Introduction:Hearing loss is proven to affect certain area of religious life among children and student population, but there was no tool to assess its impacts on adult population. This study aims to develop a new scale in Malay to assess the perception on Islamic understanding and practice among adults with hearing impairment. It is known as ‘Inventori Persepsi bagi Muslim yang Memiliki Masalah Pendengaran’ (IPM3P). Method:Literature search via several search engines using several key words were performed to find the reported perception of obligation, practice and difficulty in understanding and practicing Islam among hearing impaired population. An open-written-survey was distributed among 12 Islamic experts to find the fundamental Islamic understanding and practice that should be mastered by a Muslim. Findings from the literature and survey were analyzed using thematic analysis to derive domains for IPM3P. Items were developed based on the finalized domains. Results:Literature search revealed 8 studies reported on the religious-related-difficulties faced by people with hearing impairment which include performing ‘solat’, reciting Quran, and seeking Islamic education. Thematic analysis of literature search and survey findings revealed 7 domains which are ‘Ibadah’,‘Aqidah’, ‘Akhlak’, ‘Da’wah’, ‘Tasawwur’, ‘Tasawwuf’ and ‘Sirah’. Total of 59 items were developed based on the domains and items were divided into 3 subscales; ‘Perception on obligation’ (18 items), ‘Practice’ (21 items) and ‘Difficulty’ (20 items). Conclusion: This pioneering study may become a driving force towards more research pertaining to the effect of hearing loss towards individual duties as a Muslim. The preliminary version of IPM3P needs to be further validated to a larger population.
