Abstract
Rationale: Elderly population is susceptible to malnutrition, which requires appropriate nutrition intervention to overcome this issue. This study aimed to develop the content in nutrition resource kit which provides nutritional guidance designed for malnourished and at-risk elderly.Methods: A systematic review on available nutrition education materials and dietary guideline for elderly in community setting in English or Malay language was conducted to identify the types of appropriate nutrition education materials for their use to overcome or prevent malnutrition. Four online databases (PubMed, Scopus, COCHRANE and ProQuest Health & Medical Collection) were searched up to 15th December 2019 and manual search was included for the review.Relevant documents were identified based on inclusion and exclusion criteria; and data were extracted and analysed according to the PRISMA guideline.Results: 323 articles were identified and only 27 documents consist of articles, printed materials and guidelines were eligible for analysis. The content includes information related to malnutrition such as definition, sign and symptoms,cause-consequences and nutrition management which includes food plate, serving size, menu suggestion, example of recipe, tips to increase energy and protein intake through food or drink, texture modification, guide to use oral nutrition supplement, tips to maintain nutrients content in food and drink, and oral health.Conclusion: Nutrition intervention for malnourished and at-risk elderly can be facilitated with the provision of nutrition education materials tailored for their use. Development of nutrition resource kit with incorporation of this information is needed to improve their dietary intake.
