Abstract
Introduction: Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) implemented an Emergency Remote Teaching and Learning (ERTL) to replace the conventional face to face teaching and learning method. The Innovative Teaching and Learning Environment System (iTa’LeEM), a Moodle-based learning platform has been imposed as an alternative method to evaluate the preclinical medical students. Although this platform is an official learning management system by IIUM, the server reliability and internet connectivity may influence the student performance. Objective: To observe the association between duration to complete the synchronous online assessment and the student score. Methodology: Synchronous online assessments were completed by Year 1 (n=143) and Year 2 (n=140) preclinical medical students in 2 separate phases via iTa’LeEM Quiz. Each assessment phase consisted of 4 papers with 25 multiple choice questions each. The time given for each paper was 50 minutes. Data on duration to complete the assessment and score were retrieved from iTa’LeEM. The associations were analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0. Results: The time taken did not affect the student performance in the first phase of the assessment. Longer time in loading questions and images did not seem to affect performance. During the second phase, the duration showed weak-moderate positive association (Year 1: p = 0.006, r = 0.228; Year 2: p < 0.001, r = 0.333) in which students who took longer time to complete the assessment scored higher marks. Discussion: Some possible factors influencing duration to complete the assessment include knowledge, system server consistency and internet connectivity i.e. loading time. We cannot exclude the possibility that student who took longer time might refer to other materials during the assessment. Conclusion: Despite of various factors that may influence the duration to complete the assessment, it was not shown to affect the student performance in this new synchronous online assessment platform via iTa’LeEM.
