Abstract

Introduction: Breastfeeding practice is recognised to benefit infants as it provides many essential nutrients which can protect from allergies. However, the maternal diet during pregnancy and breastfeeding period was found to influence the breastmilk content which can also lead to allergy reaction even among breastfed infants. It is important for the mothers to have sufficient knowledge to reduce the allergy prevalent among infants via modulation of maternal diet. Objectives: This study aimed to identify knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of breastfeeding, maternal diet and infant allergy prevention among mothers in Pahang. Materials and Methods: This is a cross sectional questionnaire study carried out in Pahang using socio-demographic data. The convenient sampling method was carried out for a period of three months from March to June 2019. The respondents were Malaysian that are pregnant and breastfeeding mothers that live in Pahang. A total of 85 participants with mean age 34.48±6.58 were involved in the study. All the data was analysed using SPSS Version 12.0. Results: The prevalence of exclusively breastfed infants for at least 6 months was 83.6%. Based on the knowledge score, 67 (78.8%) were grouped as having moderate knowledge. Majority of the participants have good attitude and practice 83 (97.6%) and 61 (71.8%) respectively. The knowledge of mothers showed significant positive correlations with attitude score (r=0.215, p=0.048) and attitude of mothers towards practice score (r=0.429, p=0.001). However, no significant correlation was found between knowledge and practice score. Conclusion: In this study, the knowledge of mothers towards breastfeeding, maternal diet and allergy in moderate level. The mothers should be provided with appropriate information on breastfeeding, maternal diet and infant allergy for better health outcome.
