Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the perspectives of Qur’an memorization students regarding the factors influencing the enhancement of Arabic listening and speaking skills at the Integrated Tahfiz and Science & Technology Institutes (MITS) in Selangor. The study was motivated by the significance of these two skills as fundamental components in acquiring Arabic as a second language, particularly in educational settings that seek to provide a supportive linguistic environment for language learning. It also responds to the need to better understand the psychological, educational, and environmental factors that shape the development of oral communicative competence among Qur’an memorization students, especially in light of the observed variation in students’ oral language performance despite their enrolment in religious and linguistically oriented educational institutions that are presumed to facilitate Arabic language acquisition. The study adopted a descriptive analytical approach and employed a questionnaire as the primary instrument for data collection from a sample of 90 male and female students enrolled in the Integrated Tahfiz and Science & Technology Institutes in Selangor. The instrument was developed in accordance with the study objectives and comprised three main dimensions: psychological and personal factors related to students, educational factors associated with the curriculum and teaching practices, and the educational and linguistic environment supporting the enhancement of Arabic listening and speaking skills. To ensure the validity and reliability of the instrument, it was reviewed by a panel of subject-matter experts, while reliability was established using Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The collected data were analyzed using appropriate descriptive statistical techniques, including frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, and interpretive levels. The findings revealed that students generally demonstrated positive attitudes towards learning Arabic, as reflected in their strong willingness to listen to and speak the language, as well as their clear awareness of the importance of oral language skills in language learning. The results also highlighted the positive role of the educational environment in supporting the two skills, particularly using Modern Standard Arabic in instruction, institutional encouragement for Arabic language use, and the provision of a learning environment conducive to linguistic interaction. Furthermore, the findings indicated that certain curriculum components, especially instructional dialogues, played an effective role in enhancing oral skills, whereas other teaching practices, such as the use of modern technological tools, role-play activities, and the allocation of sufficient time for oral practice, were perceived as less effective. The study also identified several psychological challenges, including feelings of shyness and limited self-confidence among some students, which may negatively affect their oral participation and communicative performance. The study concludes that enhancing listening and speaking skills among Qur’an memorization students requires an integrated pedagogical approach that addresses learners’ psychological needs, activates the linguistic environment more dynamically, and adopts interactive teaching practices based on authentic communication and practical language use. The study recommends revising Arabic language teaching programs and curricula in Tahfiz institutions to better promote students’ oral communicative competence and improve the overall effectiveness of Arabic language learning
