Abstract

This paper examines the transmission and reception of al-Tirmidhī’s hadith legacy from Termez in Mawarannahr to the Malay world through the scholarship of Shaykh Muḥammad Idrīs al-Marbawī (1893–1989), particularly his Malay-Jawi commentary Baḥr al-Mādhī. It explores how al-Tirmidhī’s al-Jāmiʿ, distinguished by its integration of hadith transmission, criticism and juristic practice, was received and interpreted within the Malay-Shāfiʿī scholarly tradition. Through textual analysis of selected passages from Baḥr al-Mādhī, the paper identifies several dimensions of al-Marbawī’s approach, including the explanation of hadith terminology, the use of hadith as evidence for Shāfiʿī legal positions, reference to authoritative juristic texts such as al-Umm, and the adaptation of legal discussions to Malay religious practice. It argues that Baḥr al-Mādhī represents more than a translation of al-Tirmidhī’s work, constituting a sustained exercise in scholarly transmission, juristic interpretation and pedagogical adaptation. The study highlights the intellectual connections between Mawarannahr and the Malay Archipelago, demonstrating how the classical hadith tradition was preserved, developed and made accessible within a distinct regional scholarly environment.
