Abstract

Oral health is integral to overall health and well-being, as it influences vital functions such as eating, speaking, and social interaction. Nevertheless, oral diseases-particularly dental caries—remain among the most common chronic health conditions worldwide. Dental caries is not only a significant cause of morbidity but also a socioeconomic burden, with treatment costs often inaccessible for low-income populations. The World Health Organisation (WHO, 2021) has consistently emphasised the importance of addressing oral diseases, which affect approximately 3.5 billion people worldwide. Among these, dental caries pose the greatest challenge, impacting both children and adults. Dental caries is a complex, multifactorial disease resulting from the interplay among dietary habits, host factors such as saliva, and microbial activity within the oral cavity. At its core, the disease is driven by the metabolic activities of cariogenic bacteriaparticularly Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei.
