Abstract
Introduction: Prediabetes is a major public health concern due to its risk of progression to type 2 diabetes and related complications. Early identification of risk factors is essential for timely prevention. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of prediabetes and its associated factors among adults attending a primary health clinic in Kuantan, Pahang. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 180 respondents. Sociodemographic, clinical, and lifestyle data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Blood glucose status was categorized as non-diabetes or prediabetes. Descriptive statistics summarized the data, while independent t-tests and Chi-square tests were used for bivariate analysis. Variables with p < 0.25 were included in multivariate logistic regression to identify independent predictors. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: The prevalence of prediabetes was 8.3%. The mean age of respondents was 33.37 ± 12.31 years. Bivariate analysis showed that age (p = 0.038), waist circumference (p = 0.018), and psychological status (p = 0.041) were significantly associated with prediabetes. Logistic regression analysis revealed that increasing age (AOR = 1.051, 95% CI: 1.002–1.103, p = 0.040), central obesity (AOR = 4.779, 95% CI: 1.004–22.751, p = 0.049), and depression (AOR = 5.283, 95% CI: 1.070–26.084, p = 0.041) were significant predictors. Conclusion: Despite the low prevalence of prediabetes, increasing age, central obesity, and depression were significant predictors. These findings emphasize the need for early screening and targeted interventions on weight management and mental health.
