Abstract
• Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's performance at the Brics summit captured more attention than his announcement about Malaysia's interest in pursuing Islamic capital markets within the Brics partnership. • The challenge for halal SMEs lies in being excluded from traditional credit due to a mismatch with standard lending practices, not because their businesses lack viability. • Malaysia should focus on convening a Brics Halal SME Finance Working Group to establish shared standards for financing, rather than solely exporting Islamic finance expertise.
