Abstract

Prevention and treatment of paediatric blindness is a high priority for the World Health Organization, which helped launch the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and created a programme called VISION 2020: The Right to Sight. The primary reason for preventable blindness in children worldwide is congenital cataracts, which has a reported prevalence in Asia of 1.7 to 14.7 per 10,000 children.[1,2] Acquired cataracts are also relatively common in Asian children.[3,4] Despite this prevalent problem, a database search of the published literature about paediatric cataracts in Southeast Asia revealed limited data.[5,6] Chew et al. described a five-year review of paediatric cataracts in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.[5] Our study provides additional data from a suburban area in Malaysia, with a focus on socio‑economic and lifestyle factors. We aimed to describe the demographics, clinical features and visual outcomes among paediatric patients with cataracts seen in our institution and to discuss relevant literature about paediatric cataracts among Asian children.
