Abstract

Aqidah education constitutes a fundamental basis for the formation of Muslim women’s religious character and serves as a primary safeguard for preserving adherence to the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama‘ah against the influence of contemporary thought. Nevertheless, scholarly studies examining aqidah education specifically for women based on classical Islamic (turath) works remain limited, particularly those focusing on al-Mufīdah li al-Wildān wa al-Nisā' al-Muʾmināt by Imam al-Sanūsi (d. 895 AH). Accordingly, this study aims to identify the major aqidah themes contained in the text and to analyse their relevance to strengthening aqidah education among Muslim women in contemporary Malaysia. This qualitative study employs document analysis of al-Mufīdah, based on the critical edition (tahqiq) prepared by Khalid Zahri, supplemented by relevant works on Imam al-Sanūsi and aqidah education. The data were analysed thematically to identify the principal themes and pedagogical approaches employed by the author. The findings indicate that the content of al-Mufīdah centres on two major themes, namely the attributes of Allah and the attributes of the Messengers, which are presented through three pedagogical approaches: al-Ḥifẓ (memorisation), al-Taqābul (contrasting pairs), and al-Tadarruj (gradual progression). These three approaches constitute a concise, systematic, and accessible model of aqidah instruction suitable for women and children. The study further demonstrates that the educational approaches introduced by Imam al-Sanūsi remain relevant to contemporary aqidah education for Muslim women, particularly in strengthening foundational understanding of tawhid based on the tradition of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama‘ah. This study contributes to the development of turath scholarship by providing a thematic analysis of al-Mufīdah and highlighting its potential as a reference source for the development of contemporary aqidah education curricula for Muslim women.
