Abstract
This chapter comprehensively explores the transformative role of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials in solar-driven water purification technologies, addressing the global challenge of freshwater scarcity through the innovative application of photothermal systems. The discussion begins with an introduction to 2D nanomaterials like graphene, MXenes, and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), emphasizing their ultrathin structures, high surface areas, tunable properties, and exceptional light absorption. These unique features enable efficient solar energy harnessing and heat localization at water–air and interfacial zones, minimizing thermal losses and enhancing evaporation rates. Key mechanisms such as solar light absorption, nonradiative relaxation, plasmonic localized heating, interfacial evaporation, and effective water transport are detailed, highlighting synergistic enhancements in photothermal performance. The chapter also examines the photothermal capabilities of specific 2D materials, including MXenes, graphene, boron nitride, black phosphorus, and covalent organic frameworks. Comparative analyses reveal distinct advantages and trade-offs among these materials, with potential improvements through composite designs. The chapter concludes with perspectives emphasizing the need for durable, scalable, and eco-friendly innovations for real-world applications in water purification.
