Abstract
Family is one of the most significant institutions in Islam which forms the basis of a well-organized and harmonious society. Islam advocates equality in the right and duties of husband and wife in order to ensure peace, justice and welfare in the family unit. One of the major duties of the husband in Islam is providing maintenance for his wife and children as per his ability and their needs. In today’s society, financial issues have become one of the major causes of marital disputes and family instability. Rising living costs, poor financial management, and materialistic lifestyles have contributed to situations where some husbands fail to prioritize household responsibilities and the needs of their families. As a result, many wives and children experience emotional stress, financial difficulties, and dissatisfaction within the family institution. This issue can be illustrated through situations where personal needs and unnecessary spending are prioritized over essential household expenses. Although Islam does not prohibit individuals from enjoying their wealth, financial responsibilities towards the family must always come first. Therefore, this article seeks to explore the Islamic viewpoint on nafaqah, fiqh rules in relation to financial obligations of the family and and how Maqasid Shariah can be applied to solve family financial disputes.
