Abstract

INTRODUCTION In this age of rapid technological and scientific progress, ethical reflection has become more vital than ever. Science and Engineering Ethics for the Benefit of Humanity explores how Islamic principles can guide ethical conduct in science and engineering. As innovation transforms societies, the book calls for progress anchored in sustainability, justice, and human well-being. The Structure of the Book This volume serves as an initial exploration of how modern technology and timeless Islamic values can be integrated. It is divided into four interconnected parts that move from foundational understanding to applied practice. Part 1: Islamic Worldview and Its Impact on Science, Technology, and Engineering This section introduces the Islamic worldview through the principles of Tawhid (Oneness of God) and Khilafah (Stewardship). It contrasts Islamic and secular perspectives, providing the ethical foundation for scientific and technological engagement. Part 2: Maqasid Al-Shariah and Value Framework for Science and Technology Here, the objectives of Islamic law (Maqasid Al-Shariah) are explained as a framework for ethical decision-making. It links technological innovation to moral purpose, ensuring that societal welfare, justice, and sustainability remain central to scientific advancement. Part 3: Engineers and Society This part focuses on the moral and professional responsibilities of engineers. It examines codes of ethics, professional conduct, and case studies, demonstrating how ethical reasoning strengthens the integrity and accountability of the engineering profession. iii Science & Engineering Ethics for The Benefit of Humanity Part 4: Engineering Core Values in a Changing World — Nation and Economy Building The final part discusses the broader societal role of engineering in nation- building and sustainable development. It addresses global challenges such as climate change, public health, and cybersecurity, highlighting ethical leadership and social responsibility as the hallmarks of transformative engineering. Significance of Ethics At the heart of this book lies the conviction that ethics, grounded in Islamic teachings and Maqasid Al-Shariah, is indispensable to science and engineering. Embedding these principles within professional practice fosters justice, sustainability, and the responsible use of technology for the benefit of humanity. Conclusion This book serves as a guide for students, educators, professionals, and policymakers striving to align modern science and engineering with Islamic ethical values. While this volume lays out the foundation, future editions will delve deeper into the ethical implications of emerging technologies which includes artificial intelligence, robotics, and data ethics. Through continuous engagement with these pressing issues, we aspire to ensure that technology remains a means to uphold justice, equity, and compassion in service to humanity. Importantly, the methodology, worldview, and stylistic approach adopted in this book are firmly aligned with the mission and vision of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). They reflect the spirit of Tawhidic Epistemology, which unites revelation and reason as complementary sources of knowledge, guiding the integration of faith, ethics, and science toward the holistic development of the ummah.
