Abstract

The study evaluates the comprehension of Arabic dialects, particularly Gulf dialects, among fourth-year students in the Department of Arabic Language at the Faculty of Sustainable Tourism and Contemporary Languages. A qualitative methodology was used, including listening tests and interviews to explore the significance of studying spoken languages and identify the primary challenges faced by the students. The research sample consisted of fourth-year students, and the listening tests included audio recordings of dialogues in various Gulf dialects. The findings showed that students performed well in vocabulary questions but struggled with idiomatic expressions and complex sentences. They also struggled with general comprehension questions, with some providing correct answers but failing to convey precise meanings. The study also highlighted the need to enhance students' linguistic and communicative skills in spoken Arabic, as these skills facilitate their integration into professional fields like media, tourism, and politics. The study also underscored the need to expand academic curricula and develop Arabic language programs to include lessons focused on colloquial dialects. Keywords: Spoken language, Level of understanding of dialects, Gulf dialects. الملخص هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى قياس مستوى فهم اللهجات العربية الخليجية لدى طلاب السنة الرابعة في قسم اللغة العربية بكلية السياحة المستدامة واللغات المعاصرة. استخدمت الدراسة المنهج النوعي، حيث تم استخدام اختبار استماع لتقييم الفهم، بالإضافة إلى مقابلة لتحديد أهمية دراسة اللهجات العربية المحكية والمشكلات التي واجهها الطلاب. أظهرت النتائج أن الطلاب تمكنوا من فهم المفردات الشائعة مثل "أبغى" و"بس"، لكنهم واجهوا صعوبات في فهم التعبيرات الاصطلاحية مثل "انزين". كما أظهروا قدرة جيدة في فهم بعض الجمل البسيطة مثل "ماذا تطبخ الآن؟"، لكنهم واجهوا صعوبة في فهم جمل أكثر تعقيداً مثل "شو سويت اليوم في الاجتماع؟". وفيما يتعلق بأسئلة الفهم العام، كانت إجابات الطلاب متباينة، حيث قدم البعض إجابات صحيحة على أسئلة بسيطة مثل "كيف يتصافح القطريون؟"، بينما كانت الإجابات حول أسئلة تتعلق بالسياق الثقافي مثل "ما المفهوم العام للحوار باللهجة الإماراتية؟" أقل دقة. خلصت الدراسة إلى أهمية تحسين المهارات اللغوية والتواصلية للطلاب في اللهجات المحكية، حيث يمكن أن يسهم ذلك في تعزيز اندماجهم في سوق العمل في مجالات الإعلام، السياحة، والسياسة. كما توصي الدراسة بتوسيع المناهج الدراسية لتشمل دروساً تهتم بتدريس اللهجات العامية. الكلمات المفتاحية: اللغة المحكية، مستوى فهم اللهجات، اللهجة الخليجية.
