Abstract
This article highlights Malaysia’s need to adopt more dynamic industrial strategies to remain competitive in the era of globalisation. The manufacturing sector, as a key driver of the economy, must prioritise efficiency, cost reduction, and long-term sustainability. Lean and ergonomics are presented as complementary approaches. Lean focuses on eliminating waste through principles such as streamlined workflow, pull systems, Kaizen, and continuous improvement. Ergonomics, on the other hand, ensures that work environments match human capabilities, safeguarding safety, health, comfort, and productivity. Their integration creates a holistic approach that not only enhances operational effectiveness but also ensures worker well-being, reduces absenteeism, and lowers the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. This positively impacts operational costs, output, and social harmony. The article also stresses the role of modern technologies such as smart automation, AI, IoT, and big data in supporting Lean and ergonomics by improving efficiency, enabling real-time monitoring, and preventing risks at an early stage. From a practical perspective, workplace design, regular training, and risk management systems are essential for effectiveness. The PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle and Kaizen principles are recommended as frameworks for continuous improvement, with worker participation identified as a key success factor. In conclusion, the synergy of Lean and ergonomics can strengthen Malaysia’s industrial competitiveness, ensure sustainable operations, develop healthier and more productive human capital, and support the Malaysia Madani agenda. It is a strategic investment that delivers long-term value to organisations, employees, and the nation.
