Abstract

The information on comparative reproductive biology for specific Nemipterus species is lacking although they are largely consumed by local Malaysian peoples. Besides the lacking of species differentiation, research and management of the Nemipterus species are major issues for the proper management of this fish. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the morphological and reproductive variations of selected Nemipterus species. N. furcosus, N. tambuloides and N. nematophorus were randomly sampled monthly for a period of one year (November 2020 - October 2021) from commercial fishing vessels in Kuantan, Malaysia. Overall, N. furcosus showed a positive allometric growth, N. tambuloides showed isometric and positive allometric growth, and N. nematophorus showed a negative allometric growth. The mean of K value (condition factor) varies from 1.19 to 1.36 in male N. furcosus, and from 1.15 to 1.35 in male N. furcosus, while the K value varies from 1.26 to1.30 in male N. tambuloides and from 1.20 to 1.28 in female N. tambuloides. The K value of N. nematophorus varies from 1.24 to 1.87 in males and from 1.24 to1.84 in females. Male N. nematophorus are morphologically different compared to female N. nematophorus. Discriminant function analysis indicates that the head region of Nemipterus species has the largest contribution in distinguishing those selected three species. The spawning season for N. furcosus, N. tambuloides, and N. nematophorus is within February until May, November until June and January until May, respectively. Throughout the year, N. furcosus has the highest fecundity among N. tambuloides and N. nematophorus. The size at first sexual maturity for N. furcosus (male 17.2 cm, female 15.4 cm), N. tambuloides (both male and female 16.2 cm), and N. nematophorus (male 13.2 cm and female 13.8 cm). All species have almost similar sizes at first sexual maturity except for N. furcosus. The results of this study particularly fish identification, growth coefficient, spawning season and the size of first sexual maturity would be useful for a proper guideline in fisheries management in order to achieve sustainable exploitation of studied Nemipterus species.
