Abstract

The preceptorship programme is an essential component in the process of acclimating newly graduated nurses to the clinical environment. However, the preceptorship experience has been characterised as difficult and stressful. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of preceptorship from preceptors, newly graduated nurses and nursing leaders. The literature search was performed using databases from MEDLINE PubMed, Web of Science (WOS), Scopus, SpringerLink and Wiley Online Library between 2013 to 2022. A total of 19 studies were critically reviewed and relevant data were extracted and synthesised using an approach based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). The results showed that preceptorship programme have a significant influence on general healthcare systems. In summary, there is strong evidence that structured preceptorship contributes significantly to enhancing the learning needs of newly graduated nurses and prepare nurses preceptors to be pedagogically ready.
