Abstract

The Playable City design approach is a form of urban planning that strongly emphasises human-centric principles and the well-being of city dwellers. It focuses on enhancing the quality of life by transforming urban areas into lively spaces that people not only inhabit but genuinely enjoy being a part of. By combining playfulness with critical design, this approach makes urban spaces more approachable and enjoyable without losing its essential message. The necessity for a Playable City approach arises from the limited availability of urban spaces for play, which is crucial for addressing both the physical and psychological needs essential for overall well-being. This study employs mixed methods, integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data collection techniques include document analysis, site inventory and analysis, observations, and survey interviews with fifty respondents. The analysis reveals that Wangsa Maju has significant potential to become a Playable City due to its availability of spaces conducive to play. It also targets a diverse demographic, including children, teenagers, adults, and senior citizens. These findings form the basis for a comprehensive framework and design strategies that contribute to shaping a Playable City, providing spaces for both active engagement and relaxation.
