Abstract

Chronic pain frequently leads to disrupted daily activities, resulting in a low quality of life among older people. This highlights the crucial need for heightened focus and care in managing pain among older people. Therefore, this study examined the prevalence of chronic pain and its association with sociodemographic characteristics and loneliness among older people in Malaysia. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 203 older people in Kuantan through self-administered and online questionnaires. The questionnaire consisted of three parts: sociodemographic background, UCLA Loneliness Scale, and Chronic Pain Level. Data were analysed as descriptive and inferential analysis using Chi-Square and Fisher’s Exact Test using SPSS version 27.0. The present study found that there were significant associations between gender (p=0.014), educational level (p=0.018), smoking status (p<0.001), the use of pain medication (p<0.001), and loneliness (p<0.001) with chronic pain. In conclusion, gender, educational level, smoking status, the use of pain medication, and loneliness are among the factors associated with chronic pain among older people. Future research is needed to explore the underlying factors and to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions targeting sociodemographic factors and loneliness in managing chronic pain among older people.
