Abstract
This research paper examines the media framing and biases in CNN's coverage of mass shootings, with a particular focus on the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting and the Las Vegas Strip shooting. Using a content analysis methodology, this research examines CNN's framing strategies and and aims to discover potential bias or Islamophobia in their reporting. The findings demonstrate distinct patterns in CNN's framing strategies and differences on how the two perpetrators were treated. These results suggest that biases that may influence the public's perception and comprehension of mass shootings. The study acknowledges limitations, such as a small sample size and a short time frame, and calls for future research to expand the scope by including a broader range of media channels, analysing different media formats, and employing a longitudinal approach. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research and media practises, emphasising the importance of diverse sampling, comprehensive analysis, longitudinal studies, exploration of audience reception, promotion of media literacy, and responsible journalism. This document seeks to contribute to a more informed and objective public discourse surrounding mass shootings and related events by addressing media biases.
