Abstract
The present study shows that all doses of the Eurycoma longifolia standardised extracts (TAF 273) tested did not interfere with the normal oestrous cycle, hormones and morphology of the ovaries of the female rats upon treatment of 5 and 14 days. Eurycoma longifolia standardized extract may have potential in ameliorating the teratogenic effects of estradiol valerate by reducing external abnormalities in the rat foetuses and it also may have prospective use in the treatment of female-linked disorders and complications. TAF273 at a dose of 100 mg/kg has the potential to restore the oestrous cycle of the polycystic ovary rats as supported by the presence of numerous follicles in different stages of development and presence of corpora lutea suggesting the occurrence of ovulation in the immature female rats. Eurycoma longifolia standardized extract at dose of 100 mg/kg was found to have potential in ameliorating polycystic ovary syndrome induced by estradiol valerate by recovery of the oestrous cycle, improvement of the histopathology of PCOS-induced ovary and also attenuation of the reproductive hormones and steroidogenic genes.
