Abstract
It is less known to many that Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H) is the ‘Land of Waqf’. The founder of Sarajevo, Isa Bay Ishakovic, became one of Bosnia’s first Waqifs (a person doing Waqf). Waqf as benevolent properties for social, animal and floral benefits differ from conventional endowments, philanthropies or foundations by the very nature of the ultimate ownership resting with Allah. With Sarajevo as a Waqf, all of Bosnia mushroomed in Waqf. The history of Waqf in Bosnia is great with a relevant legacy of philanthropy for contemporary times.
