Abstract

Introduction: Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Kulliyyah of Medicine had adapted a synchronous online assessment via quiz and essay activities in the Innovative Teaching and Learning Environment System (iTa’LeEM). iTa’LeEM is IIUM official Moodle-based learning platform that is being used as the official assessment platform to evaluate preclinical medical students in the aftermath of the COVID-19 epidemic, in place of traditional paper-based exams. Many institutions have found that implementing a learning management system (LMS) has been difficult due to lack of sufficient training and up-skilling of teaching lecturers in the usage of iTa'LeEM and properly incorporating it for the online evaluation. Objective: To introduce and assess the effectiveness of a knowledge-sharing training workshop for instructing clinical specialist lecturers who are starting to use Moodle-based LMS for online assessment of the clinical year medical students. Methodology: Twenty clinical specialist lecturers from eleven departments from Kulliyyah of Medicine attended the online training via Zoom platform. The training workshop was conducted for 3 hours focusing specifically on empowering the participants to use iTa’LeEM for online assessment. They were taught on applying Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Key Feature Questions (KFQ) and unmanned Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). The participants were divided into breakout rooms and had a hands-on session on creating the questions with respective facilitators. A pre- and post-workshop questionnaires were provided to assess the effectiveness of the workshop. The recording of the session was also given to participants for future reference. Results: In general, the training was positively received by the participants. Sixty percent had never used iTa’LeEM and 70% did not feel competent with the platform for student assessment before the training. Overall, the participants felt more confident in using the iTa’LeEM although it was their first time logging into it. Conclusion: The training can be used by all clinical lecturers in acquiring the skills for effective use of iTa’LeEM as a platform of student assessment.
