Abstract

The swell of censure in recent times on purportedly difficult and problematic aḥādīth of the Prophet has resurfaced because many detractors allege that these narrations are illogical, irrational, impractical, or conflicting with the Qur’ānic teachings. Those narrations that have been tossed into the limelight for apparently problematic subject matter were systematically elaborated, discussed, and codified in detail by the most outstanding Muslim scholars of the past. Among one of them is Ibn Qutaybah al-Dinawārī (d. 276 A.H. / 894 A.D.). This paper applies a descriptive method whereby content analysis of Ibn Qutaybah’s book Ta’wīl Mukhtalif al-Ḥadīth will be made to derive his method of synchronizing the alleged mukhtalif al-ḥadīth with that of the teaching the Qur’ān. It also intends to develop the action guides in dealing with the alleged problematic ḥadīth relevant for today’s consumption. This paper concludes that by utilizing the positive method of ta’wīl (allegorical interpretation) will increase the possibility of positive approach in understanding and implementing the teachings of the Prophetic Tradition leading to a blissful life.
