The relationship between work-family conflict, coping, and life satisfaction among female employees in Malaysia during COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Since the struck of COVID-19 pandemic, both lifestyle and work arrangement for all employees have changed. Organisations have introduced various arrangements including working from home. For employees with dependents to look after, working from home might either be a bless or adding up to the existing conflict. Therefore, the present study aims at testing the relationship between work-family conflict, coping, and life satisfaction among employees in Malaysia. A total of 311 married female employees with at least a child below 2 years old participated in this cross-sectional survey via purposive sampling technique. The participants answered online questionnaires consisting of the Work-family Conflict Scale, Brief-COPE and Satisfaction with Life Scale. As expected, work-family conflict (work-to-family conflict, r = -.25, p < .001; family-to-work conflict, r = -.29, p < .001) and coping strategies were found to be correlated with life satisfaction (behavioural disengagement, r = -.34, p < .001; self-blame, r = -.31, p < .001; denial, r = -.13, p < .015; active coping, r = .28, p < .001; positive reinterpretation, r = .27, p < .001; planning, r = .26, p < .001; acceptance, r = .17, p < .005; religion, = .26, p < .001). The findings suggest that results from this study may provide a reference for the organisations to design specific strategies for female employees in coping with changing working arrangement during the pandemic, specifically for those who are working from home.
