Abstract

Polyamine deficient diet (PDD) is one of nutritional cancer therapies that can be applied to prevent the progression of cancer cells in the body. Many researches have been done on PDD in United Stated, United Kingdom, Japan and Sweden to develop food database on polyamine content. However, no polyamine database available in Malaysia. To emphasize the need of database development in Malaysia, this cross-sectional study aims to measure the level of knowledge and practice on PDD among cancer patients in Kuantan, Pahang and to determine the factors that associate with patient’s knowledge and practice. A total of 36 cancer patients in Kuantan, Pahang participated in this study and questionnaires were distributed among respondents through hard copy and online form. The level of knowledge and practice of respondent was analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis using SPSS software. This study revealed that 29 (80.6%) patients have poor level of knowledge and seven (19.4%) have average level of knowledge. This study also revealed that only 13 (36.1%) patients had good level of practice of PDD. The finding also revealed the knowledge score is not significantly associated with age (p=0.458), gender (p=0.421), race (p=0.120), educational background (p=0.809) and dietitian consultation (p=0.185). There is also no significant association between practice score with age (p=0.168), gender(p=0.377), race (p=0.818) and dietitian consultation (p=0.151) except educational background (p=0.015). It can be concluded that patients had low knowledge of PDD and patients also did not practice PDD. There is only an association between educational background with practice on PDD.
