Abstract

The emergence of infectious disease is not new nor are designs of facilities to protect the human from harm. Infectious disease can start and spread beyond hospital grounds that arise both epidemic and pandemic depending on its scale and effect. This presentation focuses only within the ambit of hospitals and its operation as place and space where ‘infected patients’ present themselves or be referred to for diagnose, observation, treatment, rehabilitation and at time-preparation for the dead. As a multidisciplinary workshop, the intent is to demonstrate how healthcare and specifically infectious disease has an impact on the way design is shaped to support the care through reviews of case studies on past and current designs within Malaysia and selected few worldwide. The purpose is to provide direction and examples as well as to get feedback on what had worked and what had not when these facilities were in use for future direction.
