Abstract

There is a recent tension across the Atlantic due to the issues of data security, data privacy and data governance. The EU stops Europeans and European companies to transfer personal data to the US due to a concern that the data in the US may not be safe, subject to surveillance regulation. The US stops the operation of TikTok and Wechat – both Chinese entities – in the US due to the concern that customers data would be misused by Chinese propagandists. This situation shows how important it is to establish a secure and trustworthy data and digital systems. This presentation is to highlight the strategic issues and initiatives that have to be considered by Indonesia to create a safe and trustworthy digital system, especially from the perspective of data security and privacy.
