Abstract

This world has been witnessing a catastrophic event since the dawn of the year 2020, called COVID 19. This deadly virus not only spread disease throughout the world, but also ignite an extreme level of stress to the human kind. Pharmacists across the globe has been immensely pressurizing to find the best solution with a very brief time. Not only the pharmaceutical industry but also the entire world is waiting for the new day when pharmacists will announce that there is vaccine for this deadly virus and wipe out this threat perpetually. Despite knowing the deadly outcome, pharmacists have been working day and night with this lethal virus, which tremendously raise the stress among them. In this sort of crisis, leadership plays a very important role in order to maintain employees job satisfaction by lessening stress. Therefore, this study examines the effect of authentic leadership on the pharmacists’ job satisfaction through job stress. Based on the literature review, a conceptual model was developed consisted of four dimensions of authentic leadership as independent variables. A quantitative research approach was used to test the hypothesis. This study meticulously developed a structured questionnaire by adopting items from prior studies. With three weeks effort, this study managed to obtained 220 respondents from different pharma companies in Malaysia. Results of Structural equation modelling revealed that Internalized Moral Perspective plays the most important role in lessening job stress in this pandemic. Moreover, results also indicated several notable findings that can be helpful not only for this pandemic but also can be used any of the crisis moment in future. This study, indeed, is one of the very limited researches that examine the effect of authentic leadership on job stress and satisfaction on pharmacists during the pandemic, subsequently this study proposed several guidelines for the leaders on how to manage pharmacists stress and satisfaction during this kind of crisis.
