Abstract

Candidozyma auris (Candida auris) is a multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen commonly associated with nosocomial infections and causes significant morbidity globally. Although direct evidence linking C. auris in oral infection and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains limited, its biofilm-forming and host response modulating ability suggests a potential role in creating a pro-inflammatory microenvironment, that favours disease progression. The increasing prevalence of antifungal-resistant C. auris strains has encouraged the search for alternative therapeutic approaches. Natural products including plant-derived bioactive compounds and essential oils have demonstrated promising antifungal and antibiofilm activities against C. auris. Nonetheless, their specific mechanisms of action in inhibiting fungal growth and biofilm formation remains to be elucidated in future studies. This review explores the pathogenic role of C. auris in oral biofilms, its implications for chronic inflammation-induced oral carcinogenesis, and the emerging use of natural products as alternative therapeutic strategies against this challenging fungal pathogen.
