Abstract
This paper presents an overview of the Bachelor of Human Sciences in Psychology (Honours) programme at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), highlighting its distinctive integration of contemporary psychological science with perspectives grounded in the Islamic intellectual tradition. Guided by the Tawhidic paradigm, the programme seeks to harmonise empirical inquiry with the “Science of the Soul” (‘Ilm al-Nafs), offering a holistic framework for understanding human behaviour and mental processes. The curriculum emphasises foundational psychological knowledge, technical competencies, and the integration of ethical and spiritual dimensions in teaching, research, and practice. The paper further outlines the programme’s development, accreditation, and continuous improvement through internal and external reviews aligned with national standards. Key strengths include a comprehensive and integrative curriculum, strong emphasis on research and professional skills, and responsiveness to emerging areas in psychology. At the same time, the paper acknowledges ongoing challenges, including epistemological tensions between secular and faith-based paradigms, limited resources for advancing the Science of the Soul, and the need for greater scholarly engagement in this domain. Overall, the programme represents an evolving model of psychology education that contributes to the decolonisation of knowledge and promotes culturally and spiritually grounded psychological practice. It offers a relevant framework for addressing contemporary mental health needs while remaining rooted in a coherent ethical and epistemological foundation.
