Abstract

Research activities play a crucial role in enhancing community well-being and are essential for achieving long-term economic growth. For academicians, research is as vital as teaching and forms a core part of their responsibilities. However, recent debates have emerged regarding the impact of research conducted at local universities on the broader community. Recently, public frequently questions the tangible benefits derived from government-funded research, particularly when the primary output appears to be academic publications. This raises important concerns: How do research article publications translate into community impact, and why do university researchers prioritize publication? Furthermore, in Science, Technology, and Engineering (STE) fields, many patents fail to evolve into commercial products, limiting the potential community impact of such research. An additional long-standing issue is that research Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) often prioritize university rankings and quantity of publications over community impact. Over time, these arguments and issues could potentially undermine the credibility of university research and jeopardize future financial support. To address these challenges and provide better insights, this chapter explores research with community impact. It delves into the classification of community, research types, and impact levels. The chapter also include some practical guidelines for crafting research that meaningfully impacts the community, offering valuable insights for readers seeking to enhance the societal relevance of their research endeavours. Finally, the chapter concludes some case studies of few IIUM researchers based on their experiences and challenges in conducting impactful community research.
