Abstract

The present study discusses the importance of using functional spaces in the conservation of heritage sites. Functional spaces are able to connect historical contexts with contemporary realities by fostering engagement, accessibility, and sustainability. It also charts the use of adaptive reuse strategies; whereby heritage sites are repurposed for modern uses while preserving their architectural and cultural authenticity. Functional spaces are dynamic environments that enable visitors, artisans, and communities to connect with the intangible aspects of a heritage site via exhibitions, workshops, and community-oriented events. As such, this chapter discusses design principles that can be used to convert heritage sites into interactive spaces, learning zones, and multipurpose areas, illustrating their potential to enhance cultural exchange and the survival of longstanding traditions. The examined case studies include, among others, Malaysia's RexKL and England's Tate Modern as they are excellent examples of real-world heritage sites with functional spaces. The present study also discusses striking a balance between economic and conservation goals, as well as analyses the sociocultural impacts of implementing adaptive reuse strategies at heritage sites. It is believed that functional spaces can be used to ensure the relevance of heritage sites in modern contexts while fostering community pride and ownership. © 2025 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
