Abstract

Introduction: For many decades, providing health education to clients has been an important aspect of nursing. Current structured clinical skill assessments on health education procedures, while emphasising students’ dexterity performance, frequently fail to assess the soft skills used during the procedure. The purpose of this study was to investigate the soft skill elements in objectively structured clinical skill assessment on health education procedures in the undergraduate nursing programme. Materials and Method: The clinical skill assessment index IV (CSAI-IV) instrument was used to conduct a clinical audit on the retrospective structured clinical skill assessment exam questions. A total of 20 sets of exam questions for health education procedures were audited. Results: Fifty per cent of the 20 health education procedures found in this study were assessed on preventing health-related diseases, with the remaining procedures distributed among prevention of disease recurrence, promotion of a healthy lifestyle, foot care in diabetes patients, inhalation procedures, peak flow meter usage, and other topics such as insulin injection techniques. Regarding soft skills elements, this study found that only communication skills are being assessed to students and the rest soft skills did not find them. Conclusion: Thus, designing comprehensive clinical skill assessment exam questions for health education procedures is essential to cultivate well-rounded graduate nurses proficient in both clinical skills and soft skills, ensuring their preparedness for the demands of the current healthcare delivery system.
